The island of Sant'Antioco suits every level, from a first dive to a sunset horse ride. The clubs we recommend.
Between two days of pool and beach, the island offers plenty of ways to work up a sweat. Distances are short, the spots are safe, and the three clubs below feature in the villa's welcome booklet because we have seen them at work.
Board sports: kitesurfing, wing foil and windsurfing
The Sa Barra Windsurf & Kite Club, at Località Su Pranu, enjoys shallow water that reassures beginners. It offers kitesurfing lessons at every level, wing foil and windsurfing, with IKO-certified instructors. When the mistral rises, the sight of the kites above the lagoon is worth the trip on its own.
On horseback through the maquis
Over by Cala Sapone, the Carolina Ranch offers horse rides along the coast and through the Mediterranean maquis, including sunset treks open to beginner riders. It is the favourite activity of the teenagers who "didn't want to come".
Beneath the surface
The Sirena Sardinia Diving School, Via Nazionale in Sant'Antioco, is one of the island's most professional outfits: first dives for beginners, recreational and technical PADI courses, guided snorkelling outings, and dives on the finest sites of the south coast, from Sant'Antioco to Carloforte and Teulada.
For free snorkelling, the west coast of the island lines up spectacular cliffs: the Nido dei Passeri, the Cala della Signora and the Arco dei Baci are the favourite spots for dives, masks and snorkels. And when crossing back over the isthmus, keep an eye on the lagoon: pink flamingos stay there for a good part of the year.
